Australian Open 2026: Medvedev's Impressive Comeback Against Marozsan
The Unstoppable Medvedev: Can He Keep Up His Winning Streak?
In a thrilling display of resilience, Daniil Medvedev has once again proven his mettle at the Australian Open 2026, becoming the first player to win a match from two sets down this year. But this isn't the first time Medvedev has pulled off such a feat. Last year, he managed to claw his way back from a 2-0 deficit in three Grand Slam matches, only to lose in the deciding set. So, what makes this particular victory so remarkable?
Medvedev's journey to the 2024 final was nothing short of extraordinary. He played four five-set matches, logging a total play time of 24 hours and 17 minutes, the longest in the Open era for a major tournament. However, his performance at the Slams last year was somewhat disappointing, as he couldn't quite close the deal after his impressive comebacks. Despite this, Medvedev's determination and skill were on full display during his match against Hungary's Fabian Marozsan on Friday.
The Russian's nerves were evident as he admitted to feeling anxious after winning the match 6-7 (5-7) 4-6 7-5 6-0 6-3. "Last year, I made it to 2-2 and a break up, but then I lost," Medvedev said. "Here, I had a break in the fifth set, and he broke me back, and I was like, 'not again.' But I managed to stay strong and I'm happy about it."
Medvedev's win marks a significant milestone. He has now won seven out of 11 five-set matches at the Australian Open and boasts a 10-13 win-loss record in deciding sets. After his victory over Quentin Halys in the second round, Medvedev wrote, "not five sets :)," but his mood shifted after beating Marozsan, as he quipped, "five sets again :|" to the camera.
During his on-court interview with Mats Wilander, Medvedev humorously remarked, "I saw you at the end of the third set and I was like: 'Oh, Mats is looking at not my best match.' Now I understand why you were there - it was getting close to the end, so you had to be there to interview him."
Medvedev's comeback against Marozsan was nothing short of spectacular. He rallied from a break down in the third set, winning eight games in a row to force a decider. Despite a brief wobble at 4-2, Medvedev held firm and ultimately served out the match after three hours and 43 minutes, setting up a showdown with Learner Tien.
The American Tien, who defeated Medvedev in a five-set thriller at last year's Australian Open, emerged victorious against Portugal's Nuno Borges with a score of 7-6 (11-9) 6-4 6-2. Will Medvedev be able to get his revenge against Tien? The tennis world awaits with bated breath.
