Christopher Robinson, who serves as a local elected official, has acquired the impressive 916,000-acre Pathfinder Ranches through his family-run business, The Ensign Group L.C. This information comes from KPCW, a local news outlet, and the deal was finalized on January 14. The ranch had been listed at an eye-catching price of $79.5 million last summer, although the exact amount paid remains undisclosed.

Pathfinder Ranches spans four counties within Wyoming, encompassing approximately one percent of the state's total land area. To put this in perspective, the ranch covers an astonishing 1,431 square miles—almost comparable to the size of Delaware. In contrast, New York City occupies around 300 square miles, while Rhode Island sits at just over 1,000 square miles.

Interestingly, this vast property surpasses even the fictional Dutton Ranch featured in the hit television series Yellowstone, which is depicted as ranging between 775,000 and 825,000 acres.

In the realm of private land ownership, Stan Kroenke stands out as America’s largest landholder in 2026, managing about 2.7 million acres nationwide. Following closely is Ted Turner, the founder of CNN, who ranks among the top five private landowners, with a portfolio of two million acres that spans the Southeast, Great Plains, and American West.

Robinson, who is also a member of the Summit County Council and already oversees nearly one million acres of land, acquired Pathfinder Ranch just four years after purchasing the adjacent 86,000-acre Stone Ranch. This acquisition is particularly noteworthy because the ranch honors John C. Frémont, a prominent 19th-century explorer, and consists of four primary properties located throughout the Rocky Mountain region. Much of the ranch surrounds the Pathfinder Reservoir and features over 20 miles along the Sweetwater River, as well as portions of several mountain ranges including Pedro, Ferris, Seminoe, and Green Mountain.

Among the notable landmarks on the property is Independence Rock, a historical site along the Oregon, Mormon, Pony Express, and California Trails. Portions of these trails were traversed by early pioneers, adding a layer of historical significance to the landscape.

Robinson shared with KPCW that the family from whom he purchased the Stone Ranch previously owned a central part of the Pathfinder Ranch, which they sold around 1975. His statement highlights a sense of bringing together the previously divided lands: "We’re kind of reuniting it. It’s now one big landscape."

In addition to his role on the Summit County Council, a position he has held since 2008, Robinson announced in December that he would not seek reelection. He expressed that the Stone Ranch will serve a vital role in connecting the eastern and western parts of Pathfinder. This integration will allow The Ensign Group to manage the land as a cohesive, self-sufficient livestock range, as reported by Cowboy State Daily.

Robinson emphasized their intention to become active operators rather than mere landlords, stating, "We’re going to, over time, grow into it, where we’re mostly running our own livestock on it."

He further elaborated that this acquisition embodies both business aspirations and a commitment to conservation. "We love land and water," Robinson reflected. "We think it’s a good long-term investment, and we appreciate the opportunities it affords us to be stewards over a piece of God’s creation."
